FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ ADULTS

I’ve never done martial arts before?
No problem. Our classes are suitable for beginners and no previous experience is necessary. Our experienced instructors are there to welcome and help you get started.

How many times a week should I train?
We recommend training at least 2 classes each week to see improvement in skill, technique and fitness. However we do understand that is not always possible and can offer a once a week option.

Do I need to be fit?
A common misunderstanding is that you need to be fit before getting started. Our classes are designed for beginners through to advanced levels and allow students to train at their own pace.

What do I need to bring to my first class?
For the first class we recommend wearing loose comfortable clothing and bringing a bottle of water. If you have your own boxing gloves/hand wraps please bring these along. For your first class we ask you to arrive 10 minutes before the start of class.

Why do you have a uniform?
Uniform, presentation and hygiene forms an important part of martial arts formalities and represents loyalty, self-pride through presentation and a sense of belonging.  Belt colours distinguish skill levels and commitment in addition to providing students with a measure of their achievements. Uniform also allows instructors to easily identify and correct student technique.

You teach Kickboxing – what is the difference between other styles such as Karate and Taekwondo?
SKM Kids Kickboxing classes teach and rely upon practical, effective and proven martial art techniques.

We do not stand in wide, static or horse stance positions or with fists on hips. We do not teach kata, also known as patterns or forms. We do not limit ourselves to using majority punching or kicking.

We DO stand in a natural and practical shorter stance. We DO ensure our hands are always kept at face height, fingers closed ready to protect ourselves or react if needed.

We DO teach combinations including punches, elbows, kicks, knees and effective and practical defences to these attacks.

We DO ensure techniques are performed safely and executed correctly by training on partner held pads, kick shields etc while wearing protective equipment.

Our classes do not promote violence. All classes include practical self defence and restraints to teach our students how to avoid violent confrontation and control an attacker without resorting to strikes wherever possible.

How do I know which style martial arts will suit my child?
There are many different martial arts styles available and each has their own benefits. All will teach similar principles being self- defence, discipline, goal setting incorporating different levels of fitness and conditioning. Finding one that suits your needs with positive role models, experienced instructors and where your child has fun and enjoys attending the classes should be the key when choosing a club.

As a parent you want to know that your child is having fun, being encouraged, learning new things and improving their skills, and aren’t in an environment where violence is promoted.
